Podiatry

Whats the difference between podiatry and chiropody?

Podiatry and Chiropody and exactly the same. Podiatry is the term used internationally for treating foot complaints, the term Chiropody was the UK term until 1993 where it was changed to meet international standards.

What are ingrown toenails?

Ingrown toenails are one of the most common complaints in foot medicine. It happens when the nail begins to grow into the nail bed or skin of the toe.  As the nail grows more, the pressure against the toe will increase, as will the pain and potential risk for infection.  The risk of infection exists because the nail can cut in the inside of the toe, and then with an open wound, bacteria can enter in.

In the event that you are experiencing pain or feel there is a risk for infection you should book in for an appointment with Daniel.  If removal is needed, the part of the nail on the affected side will be cut after some local anesthesia has been applied; then sometimes an acid is placed on the root to prevent recurrence.

What are corns & calluses?

Corns and calluses are thick and hardened layers of skin that develop as a result of friction and pressures. These are commonly seen on the bottoms of feet and on between toes. Treatment includes reducing the effected hardened skin and advice given to relieve symptoms.

What are thickened and fungal toenails?

A thickened nail is sometimes caused by a trauma. Sometimes the thickening occurs due to a fungal infection.  Treatment includes reduction of the thickened nail, and if required the appropriate medicine will be advised.

What can I expect from an appointment?

Daniel would start with a brief consultation and complete a medical history form. An examination would take place and then treatment of the affected area would take place. Should a follow up appointment be required, this would be discussed and an appointment to suit you would be arranged.
